Vinyl siding can be installed over the existing siding, but there are some good reasons to remove the old siding. With the old siding removed the sheathing can be checked for any damage, and any necessary repairs can be made before installing the new siding. It's especially important to look for hidden damage if new siding is being considered because of weather damage to the old siding. Installing vinyl siding over a flat surface will also result in a better appearance, and will reduce the chances of water infiltration where window and door mouldings protrude beyond the surface of the sheathing.
