Here we can see that the 4 by 4 beam has been secured to the roof with a metal tie. The adjustable post that's being used to raise the roof will have to come out, and we want the beam to stay there until the roof has been brought back down after the job is done. The string on the right has a plumb bob that will show how much the roof has been raised. Measuring the distance between the roof and the deck might not be accurate because if the rotted framing compresses as the roof is lifted the deck might move down. That's not a real problem, but the roof should only be raised enough to unweight the columns and remove the bases, so we want an accurate measurement.
